Cat M313D fault: Gauge, Adblue level and Communication
Persistent faults on CAT M313D AdBlue system
Following a recurring problem on an M313D wheeled excavator, we had to permanently remove the SCR system. In fact, the post-processing control data is disrupted. The signal does not reach the ADEM V engine control module correctly. There are two main faults on this excavator: 2466-9 and 3130-12.
Fault 2466-9 indicates a problem with the engine aftertreatment management system of the Caterpillar M313D wheeled excavator. « Abnormal update rate » means that the system’s data update rate is abnormal or erroneous. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as a problem with the system’s sensors, faulty software or communication problems.
Fault 3130-12 informs that there is a problem with the NOx Reducer (DEF) tank level sensor in the engine aftertreatment system of the Caterpillar M313D wheeled excavator. DEF stands for « Diesel Exhaust Fluid », which is adblue. Its purpose is to reduce NOx emissions. The DEF tank level sensor measures the fluid level in the DEF tank and sends information to the aftertreatment management system. If this sensor is not working properly, it can lead to performance or reliability problems for the emissions management system.
The complete tank and gauge have been changed by the owner, but the defect persists. The ultimate solution is to permanently remove the aftertreatment system (and resell the machine).
SCR removal on M313D excavator
With the excavator in limp mode, it was totally impossible to work with it. Indeed, limp mode blocks engine performance at 100% on this shovel, which could no longer even be moved.
The post-processing system is completely and definitively eliminated using specific software which flashes a new engine program developed by our team of engineers. This program defines zero DEF injection, permanently erases fault codes from the dashboard, and avoids adblue consumption. What’s more, it bypasses the limits of engine performance restrictions linked to emissions. Theoretically, it should only be possible to carry out this operation if the excavator is resold abroad, as it would no longer comply with anti-pollution standards. It’s up to the end customer to decide what to do with it.
We also had fault 247-9 (SAE J1939 Abnormal rate update). This fault 247-9 is linked to the other faults mentioned, as the SAE J1939 communication system can be used to transmit data between different machine systems, such as the engine management system and the gas aftertreatment ECU. Once our new program has been flashed, we can disconnect the post-processing ECU without any faults. The problem is now solved. We configure the missing module using our tools.
