Adblue problem on Volvo ECR235EL Tier 4F Excavator – D6J Engine

Problem Volvo Excavator ECR235EL

Are you experiencing an Adblue problem on your Volvo ECR235EL excavator? Loss of power, regeneration failure, crystallization of adblue in the tank or the various peripherals, we have solutions for you.

What happens when a Volvo excavator encounters problems with its emissions aftertreatment system

On Volvo Tier 4F excavators, and more specifically in this article, an ECR235EL, the main faults that appear on the dashboard correspond in the majority of cases to either DPF or SCR problems.

DPF -> Diesel Particule Filter: Working on the spot without sufficient revs will clog this part. The DPF/FAP is a part located in the exhaust pipe which filters fine particles. This part cleans itself automatically when various parameters are met (gas temperature, calculated degree of clogging, sufficient engine speed, etc.) – this is known as regeneration.

SCR -> The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system uses AdBlue®.

1. AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust pipe upstream of the SCR catalytic converter.
2. Heat causes urea to break down into ammonia.
3. By chemical reaction with ammonia in the SCR catalytic converter, nitrogen oxides from the engine are transformed into nitrogen (a harmless gas, the main component of the air we breathe) and water vapor.

When the DPF system becomes so clogged that regenerations are no longer possible, it sends a CAN message to the engine ECU, instructing it to switch to degraded mode to prevent further clogging. The resulting problem is that the downgraded mode doesn’t supply the machine with all its power, but deliberately limits it, thus preventing it from carrying out its intended tasks. Changing a particulate filter costs between €4,000 and €6,000, and sometimes more, depending on the model.

Adblue problem on Volvo ECR235EL excavator: The SCR system is often known for component faults. The Adblue pump, injector, Adblue gauge, catalytic converter, NOx sensors and wiring harness can also cause the system to malfunction. As with the DPFS, the result is a restricted engine, limiting power and torque, and sometimes even driving speed. The various parts are very expensive, ranging from €500 for one or 2 sensors to €8000 for a catalytic converter.

Adblue system troubleshooting solution for your Volvo ECR235EL excavator

All Volvo excavators have an Adblue system managed by an ACM (After Treatment Control Module). Among other things, this module monitors data from the adblue system. Adblue quantity, quality, injection, temperature and many others, but in fact its processor processes information relating to all the sensors mentioned above. Note that the adblue system should not be deactivated if you use your machine in a country complying with the Tier 4F standard, i.e. machines after 2014 equipped with Volvo DxxJ engines, D4/D6J for the smallest and D13/D16J for the largest.

Our solution consists of replacing the original ACM with a specially programmed control unit which will virtualize the adblue data. It will then send CAN messages to the engine ECU that are expected and « on target », i.e. that the values conveyed correspond to those supposed to be received.

Locating the ACM box and connecting it to our virtualization module

This ACM is simple to use, easy to connect and you’ll be up and running in less than 30 minutes. We’ve packaged our microprogram into a box designed and purchased from the manufacturer. This means it’s Plug And Play, so all you have to do is disconnect the old one and connect the new one.

What does the Volvo CE service module actually do?

  • Virtualizes all DPF and SCR data
  • Plug and play for fast repairs
  • It eliminates all machine torque and power limitations
  • It also removes faults from the dashboard (Check engine).
  • Depending on your location, we can send you the box or work on site.
